Remember what I said about projects? Well, I didn’t want this one anymore. Far too complex in execution, the construction was delayed due to Sadie lingering on the demolition.

For the first time since my previous relationship, I’d found myself in a mud of befuddlement. No matter how I shifted or attempted to claw myself and Sadie out, shit just became messier, the both of us sinking sad and swift.

She’d warned me, and my ass still didn’t listen.

This shit with her husband had met its expiration. Destruction was required in order to build something new with a solid foundation, but it seemed Sadie wasn’t interested in that. Not now. And that was to be expected. I didn’t want her to latch on to me emotionally just to claw herself out of the sinking ship she was in. If she wanted to be saved, she’d have to do it herself.

Detachment. Ironically, it was how I maintained control of what I knew had already been embedded in my heart for the woman named Sadie Williams. The detachment concept was supposed to be this subtle art of relinquishing control. Of not being committed to a specific outcome, but something had shifted since the day we’d crossed paths. I’d been committed to loving her pretty ass down, yeah. But for the time being, I was falling back. Creating distance.

I worked late. I took on business meetings out of town. I spent more time outside of the house. Staying away kept me sane. Staying away kept her close because if I pushed up on her like I was itching to – if I pressed what I really wanted to explore with her further – we’d likely be at odds.

It wasn’t a withdrawal of interest, but I needed her to have some sort of fixed resolve about the one she’d been promised to. And maybe I needed to grant her the time to work her way through that. Though difficult, it was a task I was capable of. I was a grown man, not some young bull lacking patience. Still, I refused to hold her hand while she teetered.

So when Sincere asked me, “How are you and Sadie?” I grunted.

“That’s underwhelming.” He swirled the glass he was nursing, waiting for my response.

“Sometimes I wish I never met her.”

Sin knocked back the remainder of his drink and smirked. “I never took you for a Carl Thomas type of nigga.”

“Because we all know that’s you with the penchant for things that don’t belong to you,” I clipped.

It wasn’t a blow against what he’d revealed to me some time ago about the married woman he once loved who was murdered, but it was a fact. One that I’d never fully comprehended about my baby brother. He always pursued what was already taken.

He shrugged in a low tone, saying, “I stand in my truth, shamelessly.”

I sat back in my chair, allowing my head to rest against the cushions. From the rooftop of Sin’s condo, the entire city pulsed like the heart it was.
